Soundwords is dance music for weirdos. It is an unapologetically queer love spell that draws heavily from the primal elements of earth, water, fire, fur, air, and moonlight. The album title “Soundwords” challenges how language limits us, words only express so much, and we are constrained by what we speak or write. We fashion our own witchcraft, our own intentions, and our own rituals on the dance floor. There are very few rules or expectations for what these processes must look like. Imagine a gaggle of gothy orchestra & band kids got rid of the bullies and transformed the back of the bus into a rave, you have Soundwords. Time is replaced with new measurements—an undiscovered sea giant's heartbeat, or the syncopation of tide and moonlight. Jentlemen infuses the cold and robotic drum machine with field recordings gathered and manipulated from nature, injecting technology with sentience. Suddenly, the mechanical once again becomes the flesh. Summoning both vocals and rhythms, Soundwords is living, thriving, and pulsating.
The opening track “Worth in Dirt” initiates the listener by asking a distorted set of questions relating to mortality and decay over a hypnotizing set of frequencies. In beat-heavy “The Longest Night”, the listener is transported to another world, growing richer as the layers of sounds are added. The realms of the dead and the living become one on the ethereal “Tongue Lined With Fur,” a track that presents the listener with a beautifully adventitious violin. “That Which is Wet” gifts us with poetry and invites us to imagine the perspective of a sea creature. Chaos slowly builds in “Until the Sky Cracks”. “Air Bitch” is a playful dancing drum machine, effortlessly twirling about in spaces unexpected. “Waiting to be Answered” is a beautifully stark track filled with the longing strings of the violin, a question with simultaneous multiple and zero solutions. The final track of the album, “Untangle” brings the listener to the bottom of the ocean, soaking us in a warm bath as the album draws to a close.
Soundwords encourages listeners to create their own rituals, their own type of witchcraft, and their own path of spirituality. Queerness forever has and will always invoke creativity, the writing of a new script, and a way of moving through the world that is often criminalized by the powers that be. Similarly, Soundwords is a collection of tracks that break free from the confines of genre and gender, a true queer love poem.
